Xmas 2002 was when his girlfriend asked “do you fancy living in Spain”. Ok he said, let’s do it, we will move on the 5th of May so sort out all the details. David, his girlfriend and his beloved dog Harvey set sail for the Costa del Sol, initially with a view to building a nice property portfolio and retiring in the sun. A successful property developer in the UK, having just completed a 4.25 million pound project converting a Grade II listed church and surrounding grounds into 11 luxury houses, meant David soon realized that the market was going to take a downturn, supply was surely going to overtake demand. So looking for something to do he took a share in a sports bar in La Cala de Mijas and became a bookmaker. Jousting everyday with the punters and fearlessly taking on some of the high rollers. This was where he was first introduced to Nigel Goldman. Poker player and author (How to win a million dollars playing online poker) Nigel, asked David if he played Texas Hold-em. “No I don’t, but got a feeling you might be going to teach me”. He went to play at the club of good friend Michael “the silver fox” Senker, after that first night David realised he wanted his own club, and within a few months this was achieved, building the new club from scratch and later selling it on. Donna was a poker playing customer at that time and looking to get involved in a little business venture, so they joined forces, set up and opened CAESARS POKER CLUB. The guys ran regular tournaments and got the backing and sponsorship of BETFRED who are sponsors of The World Snooker Championships, official bookmakers to Wembly Stadium and have a relationship with Manchester United football club. Last October saw Betfred introduce a leg of The Betfred Ladies Poker Tour into Spain at Caesars Poker Club. This being 1 leg in a series of 9 events, the rest being held at Casinos up and down the country in the UK. David is predominantly a cash player, and can be seen playing regularly at the tables in the Casino Marbella. He has won a Friday Poker Fever and cashed on a number of other occasions including The EuroSuperPoker Campeonate de Espana, and The Marbella Classic. He has been a bit of a gambler most of his life, since the age of 6 first being lifted over the turnstiles at Catford dogs by his dad, to owning shares in several racehorses. David has musical roots too, having been a drummer in a rock band in the 80s, releasing a single and appearing at the Monte Carlo nightclub doing a Las Vegas tribute to The Rat Pack. He now aspires to going to LAS VEGAS and winning a bracelet in The World Series of Poker. |
